Revived south Fort Myers consignment shop shows promise PDF Print E-mail

Sebastian Wegryn is giving Another Chance another go.

Wegryn and his partner, Michael Wood, took ownership of the troubled consignment shop on McGregor Boulevard in south Fort Myers last month.

Wegryn owned the shop once before then sold it to Deborah and David Sorenson more than five years ago.

The Sorensons now live in Georgia. But I still get complaints from folks who claim the Sorensons stole their furniture.

The Sorensons would sell consigned goods and then not pay the consignor pay far less than was owed.

This seemed to be the standard operating procedure at the now defunct Once Again Home Furnishings (not to be confused with Once Again Boutique, a great consignment store also on McGregor Boulevard) and at Another Chance.

So that's one reason Rocky Graziano, an investigator with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, got involved.

In most cases of a broken contract, it's a civil matter, Graziano said. "It becomes criminal when they've done it to enough people to be a scheme to defraud," he said.

Graziano, who can be reached at 239-477-1114, said he's talked to a few of the Sorensons' customers who haven't been paid. And a few have called him after making a complaint to say they were paid.

That's because the Sorensons recently sent "a few thousand" in checks to some customers, David Sorenson said.

"We're endeavoring to pay our debts as best we can," he said.

Deborah Sorenson told me the couple secured a personal loan and are using it to pay people back. She said she contacted all the customers who are owed money.

I questioned this, especially since Sorenson said her computer files were destroyed, so I asked if she could publish a number so people owed money could call them. But the couple declined my offer.

Instead, Sorenson suggested people stop by Wegryn's store and ask him for a number to reach the Sorensons.

But I think if Wegryn wants to make a go of his shop, he needs to sever all ties to the Sorensons.

Since taking the store back - no money exchanged hands, everyone says - Wegryn has, by all indications, treated customers with honesty, integrity and compassion.

If the experience Sandy Thornburg of south Fort Myers had with Wegryn is any indication, he prices goods right, sells quickly and pays consignors their share.

"I think he's going to be good and he's got (the store) looking real good," Thornburg said.

Marsha Crowder, the owner of a wonderful consignment shop in south Fort Myers called Hodgepodge & Hot Flashes, said Another Chance's new owner won't do business the way the Sorensons did.

"(Wegryn) really seems to be fair," Crowder said. When I asked if she trusted him, she replied: "I wouldn't give him my first born because I'm too old for that, but it's close."

So I'm going out on a limb here to say if you like to consignment shop and have items to sell, you might want to give Another Chance one last chance. Melanie Payne
